Wardlaw’s New Head of School, a Military Veteran, Meets Post 30

Edgefield County is fortunate to count another accomplished military veteran among its residents. The new Head of School for Wardlaw Academy, Dr. Jared Smith, introduced himself to American Legion Post 30 members at their monthly meeting on August 21, 2025.

 

Smith shared how his military background, including his service as a retired Major in the Georgia Army National Guard, has shaped his servant-leader approach to education and community involvement.

The room full of veterans engaged in a lively and friendly exchange with Smith, asking questions ranging from Wardlaw’s academics and instructional methods to how Post 30 could best support Wardlaw’s “Patriot Nation” student body. Possible areas of collaboration include: Boys and Girls State, Law Cadet Program, Teacher of the Year, Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies, flag etiquette education, the annual Oratorical Contest, veteran talks, a living history project, student service initiatives, Flag Day observances, patriotic art displays, and other activities centered around patriotism and the Constitution.

Leading Wardlaw Academy marks the next chapter in a career filled with both personal and professional accomplishments. Smith’s military journey began as an enlisted soldier in the Armor branch and led to his commissioning as a Field Artillery Officer. He retired in February 2024 after 20 years of service, which included both traditional National Guard duties and active-duty deployments.

 

His path includes a blend of military and academic studies, beginning with undergraduate work at a military college and continuing with a university degree in Education and a minor in History. Smith then earned a master’s degree in Educational Psychology, followed by a doctorate in Learning and Organizational Change. His diverse experience also includes working with college Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC), high school Junior ROTC, military science instruction, and online learning.

 

Smith’s visit underscored his continued commitment to veterans and highlighted opportunities for future collaboration between Post 30 and Wardlaw Academy, particularly in programs rooted in patriotism, the U.S. Constitution, and the American experience.
