American Legion Youth Programs

Proudly supported by Post 30 and Unit 30 Auxiliary

American Legion Post 30 and Unit 30 Auxiliary are committed to developing leadership, citizenship, and patriotism in the youth of Edgefield County. We support nationally recognized American Legion programs and proudly partner with our local schools to offer meaningful, educational outreach.

Students and parents interested in any of the programs listed below should contact their school guidance counselor for more information and application timelines.

Palmetto Boys State

Sponsored by The American Legion, Palmetto Boys State is a weeklong summer program that immerses rising high school senior boys in the workings of state and local government. Students build a mock government from the ground up—running for office, forming cities and counties, passing laws, and learning leadership and public service through hands-on experience. Held at Anderson University, this is one of the most respected leadership opportunities in the state.

Scholarship Opportunities:
Many colleges and universities in South Carolina offer automatic or competitive scholarships to Boys State alumni. In some cases, participation can enhance eligibility for prestigious awards such as the Army ROTC or U.S. Military Academy nominations. Alumni also benefit from being part of a recognized leadership network that strengthens college applications and resumes.

Sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary, including Unit 30 Auxiliary , participants spend a week at Presbyterian College learning about government, public service, and civic engagement through active participation in a mock state government.

Scholarship Opportunities:
Girls State delegates are eligible for a variety of college scholarships, including automatic awards at certain South Carolina colleges and universities. Participation is a strong credential for competitive scholarships and leadership-based honors programs.

🗣️ American Legion Oratorical Contest

The American Legion Oratorical Contest is a Constitutional speech competition for high school students. Participants deliver a prepared speech about the U.S. Constitution and a short, impromptu speech on an assigned constitutional topic—developing a deeper appreciation for our founding principles.

This program is designed to promote a deeper understanding of the Constitution among young Americans while building public speaking skills and self-confidence. Students compete at local, regional, and state levels, with the opportunity to advance to nationals.

In total, more than $200,000 in scholarships are awarded annually through this program.
